Only after reading Taylor's book, I was able to understand what Feigenbaum number is. If you have read Gleick's book and thought it somewhat vague, I recommend you to read Chapter 5: Oscillations and Chapter 12: Nonlinear Mechanics and Chaos. One thing I hoped about the chapter on chaos was how great it would be if the chapter were to deal with renormalization. I appreciate the author for writing such a nice book about classical mechanics.I never lost my love for physics and would like to understand particle physics one day. So, I started my journey one and a half years ago. I reviewed all of calculus, differential equations, went through Strang's Linear Algebra and read through a third of Saff's Complex variable's book. Then I started with Taylor. 26 years ago, we used Marion and Thornton for classical mechanics and figured it wasn't very good because I was getting to a higher level of physics than high school. Then we used Griffiths for EM and I found out it was possible to actually write a good physics book at the college level. Then we used Reif for thermodynamics and found out it was possible to write two good books in Physics. I then wondered why there were no good classical mechanics books at the undergrad level. Well, here it is. Thank you Professor Taylor for writing something that is accessible to self learners. As other's have mentioned, the first five chapters are a review of Newtonian mechnics and if you are comfortable with that, you can skip them. His explanations are crystal clear. He takes you through derivations step by step. Other reviews say he is wordy and that Landau is much more succinct. I don't understand those reviews. Landau is an entirely different level than this book. You cannot compare them. The purpose of this book is to prepare you for Landau and Goldstein. If you can understand Landau, why are you reading this book.

Maybe there are extraordinary people out there who can go from freshman level physics straight to Landau, but for mere mortals such as myself, Taylor is the perfect middle step. I read every chapter except for collision theory, continuum mechanics and relativity. I tried relativity, but that is really something that needs it's own full course. I did every question in the book except in chapter two and the chaos chapter. I answered around 90% correct. Answers are available to many exercises on the web with a simple web search. He gives answers to some questions in the back, though there are no explanations. The book wasn't perfect. As another reviewer said, the chapter on rotational dynamics could have been better. I tried to read his relativity chapter, but it was somewhat confusing and I wanted to move on to Griffith's Electrodynamics. I will return to relativity later and read a book dedicated to it once I have a few more physics courses under my belt. Going through Griffiths right now along with Boas Mathematics for Physical Sciences (also a great book). Some of Griffiths' exercises are hard, but doing all the exercises in Taylor prepared me for them. I am doing much better in Griffiths having been through Taylor than I would have done without Taylor. Taylor wasn't perfect, but it is better than anything else I have seen at this level. I would like to give it 4.5 stars, but having to choose between 4 and 5 stars, I give it 5. On a final note, the computer questions were excellent as well. I did those using Matlab and learned a great deal about Matlab programming along the way as well. That will be important in advanced physics where solutions to equations are often only numerical. Happy learning! The book is self-consistence, so one don't need to worry too much about the background.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Sorry, we failed to record your vote.

Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. Please try again later. I am falling in love with my life 5.0 out of 5 stars I remember that the classical mechanics class was never inspiring although I had a dream that I want to be a great physicist, and so I was very interested in physics. The professor of the class concentrated on conveying the contents of the textbook, in particular, the skills to solve problems to students, although I wanted to understand the principles more deeply. Studying physics again, after I got doctoral degree in mathematics, I have had to study Lagrange's equations and Hamiltonian mechanics. Instead of re-reading Simons' book or trying Goldstein's book, I chose J. Taylor's Classical Mechanics for my self-study, because the Amazon.com reviews on Taylor's book were of full praises. Now, I truly appreciate the reviewers. They were right. This book is really great. As do many other people, I had no time to read the entire book. So I read only the chapters on Lagrange's equations, Hamiltonian mechanics, and Chaos as well as some earlier chapters. Here, I list the chapters that I read. Chapter 1. Newton's Laws of Motion Chapter 3. Momentum and Angular Momentum Chapter 4. Energy Chapter 5. Oscillations Chapter 6. Calculus of Variations Chapter 7. Lagrange's Equations Chapter 12. Nonlinear Mechanics and Chaos Chapter 13. Hamiltonian Mechanics When reading the earlier chapters, sometimes I wanted to quit because of some dissatisfaction. His explanations of the definition of mass and force were not to my taste. But I disregarded my discontent because other authors such as Susskind, Shankar, and Simons were also a little unsatisfactory in this regard.

For another example, whilst he explains how to solve a second-order, linear, homogeneous differential equations, he omitted explanations about whether the constants he was using were real or complex. So if the readers cannot fill in the details themselves, these parts can be confusing. Moreover, at some places in the early chapters, his mathematical expressions are not so good. All the formulae he uses are mathematically correct, but I think if the readers do not have a firm understanding of calculus, it can be misunderstood. I thought that all the mathematics in the later part of the book would be unsatisfactory, but, after finishing the book, I found that his understanding of mathematics is truly sound and accurate. Compared with that experience, Taylor's book is truly reader-friendly. As you may know, the three mechanics by Newton, Lagrange and Hamilton are equivalent. The author makes efforts to explain that, if so, why we study all three. I have read some books or papers containing elementary introductions to Lagrange's and Hamiltonian mechanics. But only after reading this book, I was able to understand that Lagrange's formulation is superior when we study constrained mechanical systems, whilst Hamiltonian mechanics is better than Lagrange's approach when we have to consider the phase space. Taylor's book was the best introduction to Lagrange's and Hamiltonian mechanics. About chaos, I have read some books by Gleick, Stewart, and Strogatz, etc. But for me, Taylor's Chapter 12 was best. The greatest merit of the book is that the author concentrates on only two examples: the driven damped pendulum and the logistic map. By studying the behaviors of these two concrete examples under changing parameters, he explains the fundamental concepts of nonlinear dynamics such as the Feigenbaum number, bifurcation diagram, state-space, and Poincare sections. I have read a lot about the Feigenbaum number in other books, but I couldn't understand what it is exactly.

Please try again The explantions are very clear and the author conveys his deep knowledge of the subject. The derivations are very clear and the descriptions are also clear. The book covers all particle mechanics as well as going onto some fluid mechanics. This book is ALL you need to get a very firm grip on classical mechanics. A very good buy.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Treatment of Langrangian and Hamiltonian very well done.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again It is written more in a discussion style which is perfect for the not knowing one. Read it from cover to cover and do as many exercises as you can because every single one of them has been made to test if you've got the material covered until then. (For solutions use Chegg.com as sadly there is no official solutions manual) Next take up Classical Mechanics by Morin which is slightly slicker and harder, but after Taylor it makes much more sense and you will be able to run through it. Again, do the exercises and this time all of them as the detailed solutions are already included in the textbook. Finally, Master the subject with the All Time Classic: Classical Mechanics by Lifschitz and Landau. Congratulations, you are now a master in the subject!Sorry, we failed to record your vote.
